lineage
I just learned that beyond my Australian grandfather are some Scots and that there’s a House of Minto and some rebel Turnbull. It’s so exciting to know there’s history of causin’ ruckus in my blood. And that I could score a tartan and some coat of arms, which will make for a future awesome tattoo.
All I want is work, and Brazil, thank God, has jobs for us.
– Haitian-born Wesley Saint-Fleur • Discussing how, in the wake of 2010’s Haitian earthquake, he and his family moved to Brazil, a quickly-growing part of the world where he’s found it easy to get a job. Not everyone has been so lucky, however: Nearly 4,000 people have moved from Haiti to Brazil since...

holidays
It’s odd to me how the dynamic of family changes.
Why the best times with my sister would be those when we were nursing our father toward dying. How the most uncomfortable feelings of loneliness can come when we are together now.
I guess she’s desperately trying to find a way to make her own family and is focused on falling in love. Meanwhile, I’m in recovery trying to find a...

OK, that’s it. He won’t receive a dime from me again, and I will write to him and let him know exactly why.
Seriously. It’s time to throw this cynical politician, who once fooled a lot of people with knowingly hollow promises about “changing politics as usual” but turned out to be a completely willing (yet still inept) practitioner of politics as...

Quick guide for how to voice preferences about body types and grooming choices:
Say, “I like when women have some fat on them.” Not “women should have some fat on them.”
Say, “I like an unshaved crotch.” Not, “People shouldn’t shave their crotches.”
Etc. etc.
It is fine to have preferences. It is not fine to tell people what they should or should not look like.

Really, I’m a big fan of the men of the world. But not at the gym. Totally not impressed.

In my dream I was crying
A lady in an elevator was sympathizing with me as I was saying how sad I was that my dad was dead. She said “Remember: alone among us” (or was it “a loan among us” or “a lone among us”?). I started to cry, embraced her, and started sobbing. Sobbing in my dream, sobbing in my sleep, and woke myself up: crying.
I miss my dad.
