My cool mum & a secret gift & the problem with living abroad
- Mum: Hi Sweetie, While dad and I were de-thatching and raking the yard - whew....the UPS guy popped by. There is a smallish box here addressed to you and looks to be from Amazon. Is this to be mailed? hand-carried? opened? It does NOT tick. Love mumma
- Me: oooo a secret gift! from a secret admirer! can it easily be forwarded without too much trouble or opening of the box? would it reach me before May 30th? if any of those questions get an "not sure" - best send it w my sister. If I'm not here when it arrives they could very well toss it b/c I wouldn't be able to claim it quickly enough.
- Mum: Then you may be SOL - I have to declare it for what it is on the customs form and your sister cannot take a sealed box on a flight. It SHOULD get there, if it went out tomorrow via Priority but to do that I need to know what I'm signing on the customs. Its not a trouble, its costs depends if it can go in a flat rate box; which size, weight etc. Could it be damaged,,yada yada yada. Let me know what you'd like me to do. Love you, Mumma
- Me: Can you tell me exactly to whom the box is addressed? Lola [lastname] or some other? heh, no I'm not involved in shady activities... just a bit of prelim detective work.
- Me: How about this? when you guys are finished with raking and de-thatching the lawn and you have free minute, we open it together on Skype? That way I can be surprised and share it with you? ... Or, if that's not possible b/c of time difference.. well, you remember how in college I told you I was bisexual, and you said, "Don't tell your father" - well maybe it's another of those moments. Not that I'm engaged in anything illegal or harmful to children or pets, just that I still haven't shared everything with you... so... feel free to open it in privacy and then tell me what it is and if it's ship-able. Your call. And thank you in advance - and probably in over-exaggeration of the moment - for being a super cool mum who doesn't judge me. (I'm guessing it's just a book or CD of parental-approved quality.) xoxoxo
